The devastation is great after the typhoon Shanshan that struck Japan. The storm has been downgraded from a typhoon to a tropical storm, but the winds are still very strong.
More people have been confirmed dead and millions of residents have been ordered to evacuate.
The tropical storm Shansan has brought heavy rain and strong winds to large parts of the country.
At Fukuoka airport in southwestern Japan, the planes have had great difficulty landing. Several planes were forced to abort the landing, some eventually succeeded.
The stormy weather has so far produced over 600 millimeters of rain. That’s twice as much as the average one month.
Unprecedented levels of storm surges
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued the highest level warnings, and there is a risk of strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall over the weekend as Shanshan continues its path across the country.
Disaster Management Minister Yoshifumi Matsumura said the other day that the typhoon could cause “unprecedented” levels of violent winds, storm surges and high waves.
