The forest fires that raged this week in areas near the Greek capital Athens are now extinguished, the BBC announces.
The fires started over the weekend in the town of Varnávas, three miles from Athens, and quickly spread to nearby towns. Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes.
– It was hell. The wind was blowing and giving the fire a high speed. People panicked, says Mina Katsiki, a resident of Varnávas.
The fires are said to have destroyed a land area of over 40,000 hectares, according to the BBC.
Although the situation is currently under control, there is concern about more fires and the firefighters in the area are on high alert. Hot temperatures during the day mean that the fires can easily be revived during gusts of wind.
