Detention of Osama Krayem for war crimes and terrorist crimes

IS Swede Osama Krayem, 32, from Malmö, has already been sentenced to life in prison for the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015. He has also received 30 years in prison for the bombings in Brussels in March 2016, which were carried out by a terrorist cell.

Yesterday, Swedish prosecutors announced that they requested Osama Krayem be detained in his absence in order to have him handed over to Sweden. This after an investigation by the police’s national operational department, the Security Police, the National Security Unit and the National Unit against International and Organized Crime.

Osama Krayem, who was one of the first Swedes to travel down to the Islamic State (IS), is suspected of an execution that is considered to be “one of the most brutal murders carried out by IS during the war in Syria.”

Arrest proceedings are currently underway in the Stockholm District Court.

Locked man in cage and burned him up

The victim of the brutal terrorist killing was a Jordanian Air Force pilot who was captured by IS after his plane was shot down outside Raqqa on December 24, 2014.

Osama Krayem is singled out for, together with several other masked and armed IS men, locking the pilot in a metal cage. An accomplice later set fire to the cage and the pilot was burned to death.

The brutal execution was filmed by IS and used as propaganda. According to the prosecutors, the material was widely distributed.

– As a terrorist organization, IS has acted as an armed group in the war in Syria. The pilot was put out of combat condition and, contrary to the laws of war, was subjected to an extremely cruel act. That the execution has since been filmed and that the footage has been circulated is another violation of his person, said senior prosecutor Reena Devgun in a statement.

No one has previously been brought to justice

Deputy chief prosecutor Henrik Olin has led Säpo’s investigation and says:

– The film manifests a clear message directed at states that have attacked IS and the way the film was produced and then disseminated has been able to damage a country or an intergovernmental organization. It is a brutal film where the pilot was used as a tool in the IS propaganda machinery. No other person has been brought to justice for this act and the man we requested to be taken into custody will be the first person to be charged for this incident.

Terror expert Magnus Ranstorp calls it “a bestial murder that was committed”.

– I have seen the film myself, it is terrible to see a person being burned alive in this way. They are lined up around this cage, masked in IS military clothing, terror expert Magnus Ranstorp has previously said.
