State Secretary PM Nilsson is being investigated for violations of the species protection ordinance after his eel poaching in 2021, according to information to The worker.

Nilsson is suspected, among other things, of having fished large quantities of eel, which he also allegedly sold.

The preliminary investigation is led by the police’s national operational department (Noa).

Last week PM Nilsson was fined for poaching eels in the Blekinge archipelago in 2021.

The police confirm to TV4 Nyheterna that a preliminary investigation into a violation of the Fishing Act has been initiated following a report from a private person, but says that no one is currently suspected of a crime.

With the exception of professional fishermen with a permit, eel fishing has been prohibited in Sweden since 2007.

Description of species protection offences

Species protection crime means breaking one of the rules that exist to protect wild animals and plants. It could, for example, be about harming protected animals or plants in the Swedish nature. It can also involve importing, buying or selling species that are protected according to international regulations, including the CITES convention.
