Details: NATO surveillance of cables begins this week

According to EPN’s information, the NATO ships will be placed, among other things, near energy and data cables, and the idea is that they should primarily have a deterrent effect.

According to EPN’s information, the ships that NATO will send will patrol until April, and the ships will come both from NATO’s Baltic Fleet on duty and directly from NATO countries.

The increased surveillance is being put in place after damage to four underwater cables between Finland and Estonia was discovered during the Christmas holiday.

Swedish Navy ready

In Sweden, the navy has previously announced that NATO has two standing ship forces, consisting of four to five ships per force, which are specifically allocated to northern Europe.

– They are the closest to being directed to the Baltic Sea in this situation, said the navy’s press officer Jimmie Adamsson to SVT Nyheter on December 27.

He then also said that the navy is ready to increase its presence with ships on standby if NATO wants it.

Recently, it was also announced that efforts within both NATO and the British-led rapid response force JEF, of which Sweden is a part, are using AI to protect cables and monitor the Russian shadow fleet.
