Two seats around the council table are left empty after the deaths of Ward 4 representative Marie Trainer and Stewart Patterson from Ward 1.
With just under two years left in the current term of council, the vacant seats must be filled. In December, council voted to hold byelections rather than appoint replacement councillors, meaning voters in the two wards will go to the polls in the spring.
Details regarding the nomination period, voting day, and information about how and where to vote will be confirmed by the end of January.
A news release issued by the municipality said interested candidates are “encouraged to read up on eligibility requirements and the important role municipal councilors play.” Information and resources for potential candidates are available at haldimandvotes.ca. As candidates register, they will be listed on the haldimandvotes.ca website.

Residents in Wards 1 and 4 are encouraged to make sure they are registered to vote well in advance of voting day by visiting registertovoteon.ca. This is especially important for those who recently moved or changed addresses. Individuals can register to vote directly on the registertovoteon.ca website. Anyone unsure of whether they live in Ward 1 or Ward 4 can look up their address on the county’s ward boundary map.
Additional details about the byelection, including advance voting and voting day locations, will be announced at haldimandvotes.cain the local newspaper and through the county’s social media accounts.
