Destiny 2 launched the new Root of Nightmares raid, bringing Guardians from around the world together for the traditional World First race. They all wanted to be the first to uncover new mysteries that lie within a terraformed pyramid. MeinMMO tells you who was ahead and how close the race to victory was.

What raid race is it? For the launch of Lightfall, Bungie created a brand new raid that started on March 10th at 6:00 p.m. in-game with the race for World First.

The Root of Nightmares raid offers brand new content to explore for those who own the Lightfall DLC. It consists of a total of 4 encounters. They had to be discovered and all done as quickly as possible during the World First race. In 2023, a total of three teams were tied for a long time.

Clan “Hard in the Paint” secures victory in 2023

How long did the raid last? Punctually at 18:00 the raid appeared in the game and the keepers were able to start it for the first time. However, the enemies from the “Root of Nightmares” raid didn’t last long against the most skilled Fireteams.

At around 8:25 p.m., the first team from the “Hard in the Paint” clan completed all encounters and Bungie announced: “We have reports of a Destiny 2 “Root of Nightmares” World First completion.”

Final Word First winners Saltagreppo and the Elysium team cracked the second at 7:06 p.m. and raced to the third encounter. But a few setbacks threw her back. Only All_The_Players from the “Unparalleled” clan could keep up.

At around 8:16 p.m., all teams were honing the perfect damage phase against the final raid boss. But at 8:25 p.m. the Clan “Hard in the Paint” was able to decide the race. They were the first team to return to orbit after 2 hours and 25 minutes.

For comparison:

  • In “Garden of Salvation” 2019 the final boss fell after 6 hours and 13 minutes.
  • The Day One Raid 2021 to the “Glass Chamber” took 1 hour and 43 minutes.
  • In 2022, the Witch Queen raid “The Apprentice’s Oath” took 7 hours and 14 minutes.
  • And 2nd World First in Legacy Raid Kingsfall Raid, required 5 hours.

    • After extensive testing, Bungie confirmed on Twitter at 10:21 p.m. that everything was correct and chose the 6 players Roen, Osiris, Punz, Kai, SK and Grangalf as this year’s winners. They will all receive the World First title belt with their name engraved on it.

    Hatred and nasty comments against last year’s winners

    This is how toxic the Destiny community reacted: The dark side of this Guardians’ collaborative raid race came into play once again through toxic comments from the Destiny community.

    Some players said they welcome the fact that with the victory of “Hard in the Paint” Clan Elysium, who recently won the title three times in a row, failed. Especially the Elysium member Saltagreppo has been associated with demands for hard elite nerfs in the game since last year, which many rejected.

    I really hope so [Saltagreppo] reached the 10th place and everyone can laugh about him. I never wanted anyone to fail day 1, now I do! […] I want you to fail to make World First so I can laugh at you like most in the community I’m afraid.

    Even if this race is certainly also a competition, we have known each other for years and stick together. As a result, none of the clans that competed in the World First Raid had such disapproval of their competition. But on the contrary. SK from the winning clan “Hard in the Paint” commented shortly after the nasty hate comments from the community against Clan Elysium:

    To anyone who’s flaming Clan Elysium or Saltagreppo or any of the other guys. You guys aren’t fans of Destiny 2. Many of us in the top-end raiding scene have known each other for several years, and it’s all just friendly competition. These guys don’t own or deserve a flame at all.

    This added to the tension: Even before the raid race, players were concerned about some bugs in the game. A total of 9 items were also blocked for the race.

    Nightmare Raid Race was a crowd puller on Twitch

    So many wanted to see the World First run: Shortly after the start of the raid, Destiny 2 topped the number of viewers on Twitch.

  • Over 468,000 concurrent viewers catapulted Destiny 2: Lightfall into first place shortly after the raid launched, ahead of Just Chatting, League of Legends, VALORANT, Fortnite, and CS:GO.
  • At around 7:41 p.m., the concurrent viewership peaked at 520,000.
  • In comparison, at the World First for the King’s Fall Raid, there were only 246,000 simultaneous viewers and thus 3rd place behind the streams of Just Chatting and League of Legends. (via twitchtracker.com).

    • Also new to this year’s raid race was the official live stream from Twitch Rivals.

    When does competitive mode end? All players who do not want to experience the raid in competitive mode will have to be patient. Bungie will keep the mode active for 48 hours this year. The raid can only be played in normal mode from Sunday evening at 6:00 p.m.
