Destiny 2 weakens popular supers so that a class can finally play something else

In the world of Destiny 2, change through customization is inevitable. But this time it’s not just ordinary balancing changes. Bungie plans to overhaul one of the most popular support supers so that warlocks are finally free.

What did Bungie announce? The online shooter has received numerous updates and expansions since its release to keep the gaming experience fresh and interesting. Now Destiny 2 game director Joe Blackburn revealed his plans for the next update in a recent interview with PCGamer.

A major focus for Bungie right now is what many players consider to be the strongest healing option in the game: the Solar Warlock’s “Fountain of Radiance.”

  • This ability has proven extremely useful when it comes to keeping teams alive in dangerous PvE battles.
  • However, the well has also historically sparked discussions about game balance, particularly in relation to the Warlock class.
  • Many players see little other option in the endgame than to use the well as a healing and buff option. Also because there are hardly any other such strong options.
  • The planned changes could finally free warlocks from their endgame “super handcuffs” and give them the opportunity to try other abilities and explore different playstyles.

“The Final Form” will be the final DLC of a major saga in Destiny 2:

How strong should the nerf be? Currently, the Warlock Super “Fountain of Radiance” still clearly dominates in combination with some Destiny 2 exotics like “divinity”. Although this one was only recently nerfed.

Destiny 2 confirms the most unpopular nerf suggestion – also has 26 more exotics on the list from Season 19

The combination is still considered the best endgame support and is therefore still firmly part of the DPS meta in Bungie’s loot shooter. But that also makes it pretty boring in the long run.

Blackburn emphasized that the overhaul shouldn’t mean that the Warlock class will be weakened overall. Rather, it should give players the option of new opportunities.

We’ve had to do that before, like with Divinity and autoreload. At some point you’re like, ‘Hey, this super ability has uses that a lot of people like, but we also use it to handcuff a lot of our players. So, what version of that is there that we can say, ‘okay, gone are the days of everyone feeling like they have to go through with it.’ We know we need to make some changes before the The Final Form raid.

    explained Joe Blackburn

Previously, many veteran elite players, including this year’s Worlds First winner Saltagreppo, as well as other Destiny streamers, had voiced their opinions on the Fountain’s impact and suggested changes.

4-time Worlds First winner Saltagreppo has been calling for the fountain to be adjusted for some time

His reasoning: The fountain restricts build crafting and the creativity of the players in the endgame too much.

The changes I propose would actually improve the gaming experience for those who play less, as I’m always asking for a balanced game with more difficulty options to suit everyone’s needs. If anything, you should be happy. In my ideal game, you can play 3 hours a week with any build and get along just fine.

    Saltagreppo explained on Twitter

Saltagreppo thus wishes to reduce the dominance of a single skill, in this case that of the fountain, in order to encourage more diversity.

What this new diversity may look like in the future is shown in the current Season 22, in which the Titans support their teammates with a powerful new strand aspect, the “War Banner”.

  • The War Banner strand aspect radiates energy that periodically heals nearby allies and increases melee and sword damage, which is extremely effective.
  • However, other Destiny streamers like Gladd fear that if they lack this powerful option in a raid, it may detract too much from the casual player’s experience.

When is the Warlock’s Solar Super due to be nerfed? According to current plans, Bungie seems to be aiming for the upcoming expansion “The Final Form” with the fountain nerf.

The Destiny 2 community is now eagerly awaiting how Bungie will implement these announced changes in practice and how they will affect gameplay and strategy.

Do you agree with the views presented, or do you think that with the fountain being the strongest healing option in the game, it needs to be maintained as well? Let us know what you think and what you think of it in the comments.
