Destiny 2 tears down big hurdle for new players, causes cheers

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Actually, Destiny 2 had good news this week when it made key armor perks available to all players for free. But many Guardians were also becoming suspicious because one thing about Bungie’s announcement seemed to reinforce their fears of hard nerfs in the upcoming Lightfall DLC. MeinMMO tells you what fears and why this is so.

A Warden in Destiny 2 is stronger when they lock their armor to a build, specifically using the available armor mods. However, up until this week, many of these important ability options were only available to Guardians who had played through all of Destiny 2’s content.

  • Charged with light: Since Season 9, the light has been overloading you and letting you spend the energy on powerful buffs.
  • Warmind Cells: In Season 10, Rasputin donated his mini nuclear bombs, which you can explode or collect for bonuses.
  • Elemental Sources: Since Season 11, Guardians have been able to create colorful elemental sources that are collected for bonuses and are also available to the whole fireteam.
  • The collection of popular battle mods is open to everyone for use this week.

Up to now, however, it has not been possible for new players to get these important mods and thus advantages when entering the game after Season 11 or to earn them afterwards. You could only buy the mods in small bits and pieces, and that was not only expensive, but also RNG-based.

Bungie had this good news to announce: As a result, many Guardians have long wanted Destiny 2 to make these important mods better and more directly accessible. The player request was complied with this week.

A short message on Twitter announced the change that the important standard armor mods will now be released free of charge for all players.

As a taste of what’s to come in Lightfall, we have some exciting updates for you. We’ve unlocked all the default armor mods for everyone!
As major changes in build crafting go live with Lightfall, we want to give everyone the ability to use all mods in their current state. Focused like crazy.

Understand Guardians: “Use the mods while you still can!”

This made the guardians suspicious: So it was actually excellent news, were it not for that one small, frightening addition to Bungie’s message. The developer also cryptically stated in his Twitter message in the last paragraph: “[…] use all mods in their current state.”

In particular, the two little words “current state” caused many experienced Guardians to turn up their noses. They think they can already smell the hard nerfs for mods for Lightfall.

This is how they interpreted the well-intentioned hint in the Destiny Reddit statement: “Use the mods while you can”. Especially knowing that Bungie has a habit of often significantly rebalancing things with such systemic changes.

Commented player StochasticSquirrel: “I strongly believe that the current system, which is painful for new players, will be replaced with a new system, which is painful for all players.”

Another guardian named Dominate_on_three also comments on reddit:

Giving everyone a “chance” at the last minute is, to my ears, the language of the [Abschieds]. “We’re going to visit Grandma because we want you to be able to see her again before the big surgery. Also, it’s weird this “opportunity” so close [Lightfall] close. Seems kinda cruel. “Here’s what you’ve always wanted. Enjoy it for a month, after that it’s gone forever.”

Lightfall lets the Guardians swing the strand grappling hook – but still with the old mod perks?

Lightfall could bring drastic nerfs to mod perks

Particularly popular mods are the so-called combat mods such as elemental sources, “charged with light” and warm spirit mods. There is hardly a build for many players where the first two are not used. Only the Warmind mods have not been as popular and effective since their nerf in Season 15.

Lightfall brings a new system: It has been known for some time that Bungie is planning its own internal mod and build system for Lightfall. You could already admire the first images in the showcase, where the elemental source mod “Elemental charge” can also be seen in use.

At least these mods don’t seem to disappear from the game entirely. It also looks like the mod and build system will allow you to better assess the effects of the mods on your own character in the future.

The effects of the mods are displayed in the lower right of the character stats menu.

However, it is questionable whether they will be preserved in their current state. Bungie appears to be planning to use the system to change the way players use mods. For example, the system could be simplified drastically to make it easier to understand. More accessibility to content for all is something that has been improved many times before and that Bungie is also striving for.

Bungie may have planned these three options:

  • With Lightfall bringing a new ability class called “Strang” into play, one might plan to severely nerf the old versions of the mods, make them more expensive, or more power hungry. This would also automatically weaken the current builds of the players.
  • But Bungie could also just simplify the use and understanding of mods and their sensible use without adapting the function of the old mods.
  • The third option is that in addition to the old mods, simply add a few new and fresh ones. These could then work particularly well with the new ability of the darkness “Strand”, for example.
  • No matter what Bungie will announce. The community has already pricked up their ears and is looking forward to more information about this Lightfall system and how much weaker or stronger their guardians might become with it.

When will there be more information about this? In the next “This Week at Bungie” blog, the developer wants to go into detail about mods and builds in Lightfall. So next week, more precisely on January 19th, there will be more information about the planned changes for buildcrafting and mods in the new DLC “Lightfall” and thus Season 20. Guardians will then be able to explore the new content beginning February 28, 2023. MeinMMO will also keep you up to date on what’s new in Destiny 2.

What is your opinion about this? Do you also think there will actually be hard nerfs for the old mods? Or will Bungie just simplify the system a bit and streamline it to better cater to casual gamers? Write us your view in the comments.

Some players would prefer a fix for PvP or other problems instead of nerfs for mods, such as this one:
