Destiny 2 is currently making headlines due to the possible postponement of the important DLC “The Final Form” and the current wave of layoffs. An internal Bungie source has now spoken to US journalist Paul Tassi from Forbes and shed some more light on the matter.
What happened last?
Where does the report with the new insider information come from? Like the first insider information from November 1st, the new ones also come from a report by US journalist Paul Tassi from Forbes. After a long conversation with an internal source at Bungie, he provides more information about the layoffs and the possible postponement of the DLC.
New information about the layoffs: Management allegedly gave up bonuses
What new information is there about the layoffs? Paul Tassi’s internal source was able to provide the following insights:
Bungie tackled layoffs as a last resort and examined and planned all other savings options in advance. According to Bungie, management even gave up their annual bonuses. An exact amount is not known.
The workforce reportedly doesn’t blame Sony’s takeover. This even saved the developer from an earlier crisis.
The studio itself also missed its annual target by around 45% because the player engagement rate and revenue fell sharply after the release of the “Lightfall” DLC.
The employees are probably very angry at the management level.
What about the final form? This is what the internal source had to say about the new DLC:
The alleged postponement of The Final Form from February to June 2024 had already been known internally for several months.
The Final Form should not only be as good as Forsaken or the Destiny expansion The Taken King, but better. In the time they have gained until the release, they want to incorporate the previous feedback and bring the DLC to the best possible level.
However, the current development status of the DLC is reportedly quite advanced and ahead of plan.
Is there any more information about Destiny 2 in general? Paul Tassi also has new insights into this:
Parts of the PvP Strike team are affected by the dismissals, as is the player safety team. The new map pack is already well into development and will not be canceled.
There are currently no announcements of any further personnel changes for Destiny 2.
The introduction of the in-game LFG feature was announced to the community before the developers. The rollout is technically complicated, but it will come.
The developers campaigned for a reduction in microtransactions, but this was rejected. Microtransactions are essential for the game’s financial performance, given the supposedly high operating costs. Event tickets in particular would sell very well.
Bungie’s stated goal remains to be a studio with multiple IPs.
Overall, the layoffs and changes seem to be taking place primarily at Bungie itself. Plans from the parent company Sony have come up little or not at all in the internal discussions to date. However, the employees are generally angry and the performance of Die Finale Form will probably determine what happens next with Destiny 2 and Bungie.
