Destiny 2: Cheat method reveals explosive details

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Cheats in Destiny 2 ruin PvP for honest players. Now, however, an ongoing court case has revealed that the cheaters themselves are also being tricked and spied on. We tell you what sensitive data a hacker working for Bungie discovered.

This cheat procedure is about: In June 2022, Bungie obtained a €12.4 million judgment in her favor for copyright infringement against multiple defendants. They were involved in the development and deployment of the Destiny 2 cheat software “Wallhax”.

At the time, Elite Boss Tech and its owner acknowledged that their software violated Bungie’s DCMA by circumventing technical measures as well as applicable copyright law. However, that was not the end of the case, as the defendants had to hand over documents to Bungie that identified other parties involved.

As Torrentfreak published, Bungie’s fight against cheaters now extends over 4 continents and aims to rigorously bring everyone involved to justice.

  • Lead Wallhax developer Patrick Schaufuss from Germany has already been accused
  • Plus another Denmark-based Wallhax developer named Daniel Larsen
  • With the help of the new documents, Anthony “Rulezzgame” Robinson from Germany and several defendants from the Netherlands, San Jose USA, Sichuan, Shanghai, Beijing, Denmark and Portugal were also targeted for the default judgment
  • Cheat provider “Wallhax” probably spied on its users for years

If there was any doubt about Bungie’s hard-hitting determination against cheaters, an avalanche of new lawsuits over the past few days have settled them once and for all. Bungie’s top attorney Don McGowan said, “Anyone stupid enough to volunteer to be a defendant and attack the Bungie community will face serious consequences.”

Documents revealed highly explosive details: The documents handed out by the cheat maker “Wallhax” were handed over by Bungie to Steven Gurtis. He is an ethical hacker, video game cheat expert, and works for Unit 221B. This is a company specializing in cyber crime and hacks. He is also a Destiny 2 player with over 2,200 hours of logged game time.

Gurtis was not only able to identify other users of the cheats from the documents. He also found highly explosive details in “only 20,868 entries” of the “Wallhax logging function” that cheat users should be made aware of sooner rather than later.

Cheats are a security risk for players and PC: The data and documentation Unit 221B analyzed for Bungie shows that the cheat software didn’t just cause a lot of kills for its users. It also precisely logged the cheaters’ PCs and was even explicitly designed to penetrate private data areas.

  • One log entry points to a browser tab called “patientportal.mhsgenesis.health.mil login” and another is labeled “MHS GENESIS Patient Portal – COVID-19 Results”.
  • Steven Gurtis explains:

MHS Genesis is the patient portal for the United States Department of Defense. I believe these log entries represent logging of browser windows containing MHS Genesis patient portal sessions including health information. Based on this information, it appears that the Wallhax cheat software scanned active military or Department of Defense PCs and recorded data from them. Some of the logged processes are not stand-alone applications, but are located on browser tabs that the user had open on their computer.

The text of the statement, which has not been redacted, does not indicate that logging data from military personnel was an explicit goal of the cheat. But it shows once again that scammers should never be trusted.

  • For one thing, Bungie’s security measures have been bypassed to ensure that cheat users can still access Destiny 2 and effortlessly earn achievements against other Guardians that are not based on their own skill, but rather on the technology of the cheat software.
  • In addition, Wallhax served the purpose of efficiently penetrating into the private data of its users and collecting as much valuable information there as possible.
  • Whether and what the cheat manufacturer planned with this information is still unknown. But that shouldn’t be much of a consolation for users of the software.

What do you think of the investigation and the information provided? Would you have expected “espionage” on this scale from illegal cheat software? Or do you think it’s absolutely fair that cheat users have now attracted nasty attention? Please leave us a comment.

In Bungie’s attorney’s opinion, potential cheaters and haters have been tolerated for far too long. Because of this, Bungie is making many “strategic moves” to denounce any approach or suggestion of cheaters in Destiny 2:
