Despite the crisis – here Sweden is at the top of the world

Fact: Sweden is second on the global innovation index

Switzerland is in first place in 2023, as it was last year.

Sweden climbs from third to second place this year.

Third on the list is now the United States, fourth the United Kingdom and fifth Singapore.

Sweden takes silver in this year’s results of The Global Innovation Index, which is made by WIPO (World IP Organization), which is an organization under the UN, and Peter Strömbäck is really happy.

Sweden sees itself beaten by Switzerland, but is better off than, for example, the USA, Germany, Korea and China.

— This gives a picture of how the country is performing. It is going well for Sweden to create knowledge assets, i.e. intangible assets, and to make use of them, among other things, with the help of intellectual property rights, he says.

Researcher

Sweden invests a lot in research, he explains, and is keen to have good universities. It is also about being able to make use of the flashes of genius that are born there, and turn them into concrete products and services.

— We are good at a lot of things related to energy and green transition.

It has also gone well for Sweden there. He points to the IT industry, where Swedish innovations and companies are the basis for large parts of mobile telephony development, and life science companies that have produced important medical innovations. Successful companies have been built on that, according to Strömbäck.

— This is the hope for the future.

Energy and green transition

Going forward, it will be even more about energy and change, according to Peter Strömbäck.

— If we didn’t have this innovative power, then I would have been worried. How should we then be able to meet the climate challenges? I am very happy now.
