Despite more than 100 film adaptations you have never seen

1597 became William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet listed for the first time. 426 years later, the story of the unfortunate lovers from hostile camps is still a popular topic. There are now over 100 film adaptations of the subject, ranging from more classic adaptations such as Romeo & Juliet to modern interpretations such as William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet to veiled adaptations such as West Side Story.

But anyone who thinks they have already seen everything that history has to offer is wrong. Because on June 22, 2023 starts with elemental the latest Pixar animated film in German cinemas, which visualizes the Romeo and Juliet idea in a completely new way.

Pixar’s Elemental tells an ancient story in the cinema in a completely new way

In Element City, where the elements Fire, water, earth and air are alive and when people live in different counties (similar to Zootopia), Ember is at home. The young fire woman with the quick temper is the daughter of immigrants who dared to make a new start in the big city and opened a shop. Ember is supposed to take over this business, but after a water slump it could be closed forever.

Elemental: Ember & Wade

Ember meets the sensitive Aquarius Wade, who is the complete opposite of her character. Ember and Wade are literally like fire and water. And if there’s one rule in Element City, it’s that the different elements can’t mix. There is even a particularly pronounced enmity between the fire and water people. Nonetheless, the two grow closer.

Pixar’s Elemental tells the Romeo and Juliet story with elementary puns, absurd situation comedy and wacky colorful fantasy creaturesranging from sports-loving cloud-ladies to pubescent earth-boys flirting with flowers sprout from their armpits. You certainly haven’t seen Shakespeare like this before.

Elemental is more than just a Romeo and Juliet remake

However, Elemental would not be a Pixar film if the new Romeo and Juliet shoot remained the only special feature of the animated adventure. In addition to Ember’s and Wade’s love, the immigrant status of Ember’s family plays an important role and gives the film a contemporary touch. Because the burning fire people in Element City are usually called Outsiders and “dangerous” immigrants avoided.

The Elements of Element City

How much this level was personally important to Elemental director Peter Sohn (Arlo & Spot), who processed his own experiences as a child of Korean immigrants here, can always be felt when the mutual expectations of Ember and her parents clash. Because Ember’s father wants his daughter to have a better future with the family shop and forbids her to deal with Wade. But how far is it right that old traditions to honor and when must a child have their own new identity find to be happy?
