Despite budget holes – Malmö city does not raise taxes

Hear the chairman of the municipal board tell more in the clip.

The city of Malmö describes that unemployment has decreased in the municipality over a longer period. In addition, the number of households that needed support has decreased during the year.

– We live in a tough economic situation in the whole country, but we have built a stable economy in the city of Malmö, says municipal councilor Roko Kursar (L).

Strong move-in

According to the city of Malmö, there have been large surpluses for many years, which are now planned to be used next year in a profit equalization reserve – if the economic situation continues to be worse.

– We have a strong move-in rate and more people are able to make ends meet. The tax revenue during the year is higher than we thought, says Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh (S), chairman of the municipal board.

325 million missing

Despite this, there is a shortfall of SEK 325 million in the budget.

– It’s money that we can spend, even though we don’t have the income this year. We can do that because we had many years of large surpluses. The regulations are there so that we can underfinance, says Stjernfeldt Jammeh.

Certain efficiencies are being made in the various committees, including the technical committee. Instead, priorities are made in welfare, including the functional support board, which receives the largest single budget increase.

The budget for 2024 is hammered out in November.
