Host country Qatar has received enormous criticism during the FIFA World Cup.
Now Denmark chooses to show its big heart after the exit in the WC.
By donating a substantial amount of money to vulnerable migrant workers.

In recent years, Qatar has received a great deal of criticism for the country’s preparations for the soccer World Cup 2022. Much focus has been directed at how migrant workers have had to endure the worst possible conditions to build the new World Cup stadiums.

Denmark’s gesture

Many reports have shown inhumane working conditions and thousands have died during the construction of the capital Doha. Several pressures have been directed at the International Football Association, Fifa, to act and there has been talk of a compensation fund of several billion kroner for migrant workers who have suffered from human rights abuses.

Now the Danish Football Association, DBU, has acted after a real gathering of forces. After Denmark’s exit from the football World Cup in Qatar, they are acting in the most admirable way and are now donating over 500,000 Danish kroner, equivalent to roughly 800,000 Swedish kronor, to vulnerable migrant workers.

“Proud of it”

The collection comes as a result of deciding to donate SEK 10 for every goal in Danish football during the month of November. There were a total of 55,911 goals in all series in Denmark.
– On behalf of Danish football, we can now contribute concrete support to migrant workers in Qatar. It can contribute to securing better conditions for more people in the future. We are aware that the donation from Danish football cannot stand alone, but I am proud of the contribution from Danish football as a whole, says the DBU chairman Jakob Jensen in an official press release.

The money collected will be sent to the trade union “The Building & Workers International” where it is earmarked to improve the conditions of migrant workers in Qatar. What an admirable gesture by Denmark and hope more countries follow this fine initiative.
