Denmark is strengthening its presence in the Arctic and the North Atlantic, announces the country’s Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen (V).

A total of around 14.6 billion Danish kroner will be used in the reinforcement. Of that, 11.8 billion Danish kroner, corresponding to just over 18 billion Swedish kronor, goes to military purposes.

The money will, among other things, go to three new warships and drones. The ships will eventually replace four ships that are old and worn out.

The announcement comes at the same time that US President Donald Trump has expressed that he thinks Greenland should become American and that Denmark cannot “deliver freedom” for Greenland in a situation with Chinese and Russian ships all around.

Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt says that the three new ships in the Arctic “secure stability”, and that the investment means a lot for the security of Greenlanders.

– We are also aware that the security policy situation has changed, and we must take this into account.
