Ministers from Denmark are in Rwanda on Friday to discuss plans for a Danish asylum reception in the African country.
In a jointly signed document, the two countries confirm an intention to cooperate in moving asylum seekers in Denmark to Rwanda, reports the Ritzau news agency.
From the Danish side, the document has been signed by Migration and Integration Minister Kaare Dybvad Bek (S) and Aid Minister Flemming Møller Mortensen (S).
The two countries have for some time discussed a collaboration to get an asylum reception in the country – a line the Danish Social Democrats have advocated for several years. The new document also states that work must be done so that the asylum seekers can then settle in Rwanda.
Britain has a similar arrangement with Rwanda. However, a plane carrying asylum seekers from there was stopped by the European Court in June.
Denmark could also breach the Dublin Regulation, which determines in which EU country an asylum process must be handled, if the countries go ahead with their plans.
The government’s support parties are critical of the plans, while the blue parties call the trip to Rwanda an election campaign trick.
