Since Saturday, violent fighting has been going on in Sudan between government forces and the paramilitary group RSF, which is trying to seize power. Denis Semakula from Uganda is the head of the Medical Mission’s humanitarian work in the country, when SVT reaches him he is at his home in Karthoum.
He says he hasn’t gone outside since the fighting started and that he lives on the supplies he has bunkered up. Shots and explosions are regularly heard from the streets.
– The situation develops so quickly that it is difficult to know what will happen. They are fighting with heavy weapons and it is difficult to get an idea of what is happening, says Denis Semakula.
Will stay
Despite that, he and Läkarmissionen have no intention of leaving the country. Semakula estimates that around half of the country’s population will be in need of humanitarian aid as the already scarce supply of food, water and electricity is exacerbated by the fighting.
– We want to stay here and help the people here in Sudan. Our mission is to help the people of Sudan live good lives. If we leave, the people will be worse off.
