A person in Gästrikland repeatedly sought care because of bleeding from the abdomen, without receiving an examination. When the patient was given time, uterine cancer was diagnosed, and a few months later she died.
According to Region Gävleborg, the diagnosis may have been delayed for five months. During the examination, daughter tumors were also discovered in the abdomen and chest.
“I regret that the patient did not immediately receive the care and examination that the symptoms should have prompted and thus suffered from a delayed cancer diagnosis and treatment,” says chief physician Peo Hermansson in a press release.
After the incident, Region Gävleborg has now submitted a Lex Maria notification to Ivo (the Inspectorate for Care and Care).
“However, it is difficult to assess whether the prognosis and course of the disease would have been different if the patient had been diagnosed earlier. We have gone through the case in an internal investigation and are now reporting to get IVO’s independent assessment of the incident,” says Peo Hermansson.
