A health emergency has been declared in Peru as a heat wave and heavy rains have led to an increase in dengue fever cases.

DOUBLE INCREASE IN CASES COMPARED TO 2023

In the statement made by the Ministry of Health, it was stated that the decision will cover 20 regions, including the regions surrounding the capital Lima. It has been reported that 32 people have died due to dengue fever in the country since the beginning of the year, and the number of cases has increased to 31 thousand 300. It was emphasized that the number of dengue fever cases recorded in the first 7 weeks of this year increased by 2 times compared to the same period in 2023. “Weather conditions have created a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes to multiply faster and spread the disease faster,” said Minister of Health Cesar Vasquez.

Declaring a health emergency allows the government to more quickly transfer funds and send more doctors and nurses to dengue-affected areas. Dengue fever, transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, causes symptoms such as fever, nausea, vomiting, fatigue and body aches.
