Hundreds of demonstrators protested in several towns in Chad to denounce Paris’ support for Mahama Idriss Déby Itno and the ruling junta in N’Djamena.
“Chad, free! France, get out! A few hundred demonstrators protested against the presence of France in Chad and Paris’ support for President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, who has been in power since the death of his father, the dictator Idriss Déby Itno, in February 2021. He is backed by a military junta that has taken power by force, if not with the support of France and the international community.
The junta in power
Hence the anger of the Chadian people who wish to establish a democratic government. Organized by the opposition party Wakit Tamma, the initially very peaceful demonstration became more tense. In N’Djamena, the capital, as well as in Abeche, the country’s third largest city, the demonstrators attacked symbols of France. Two tricolored flags were burned and then Total stations were ransacked.
The government of the military junta was supposed to be temporary and to organize elections. But it seems that Mahamat Idriss Déby does not want to leave his place so easily.
