Demonstration in Malmö against Israel’s participation in Eurovision

There have been several pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Malmö during the day.
Outside the Malmö arena where the final is taking place, several protesters have been hailed and dragged away by the police.
– We have taken the decision to reject the participants from the scene, says Richard Lundqvist, press spokesperson at the police.

Just before 8 p.m., a demonstration took place outside the Malmö arena, where the final takes place. That demonstration did not have a permit and a large number of people have gathered between the entrance to the station and the arena.

– We have taken the decision to reject the participants from the site. The information I have is that the participants then went to the authorized demonstration at Dagvattenparken, says Richard Lundqvist, press spokesperson at the police.

Pictures from the scene show the police pulling away several protesters who sat on the ground. Several people have been rejected and one person has been removed from the scene with the support of Police Act 13.

– I don’t know exactly why the person was removed, but he has been removed to another location in Malmö, says Richard Lundqvist.

10,000 in the manifestation

The previous march, which went between Stortorget and Mölleplatsen, is one of several that were set in motion during the run-up to Eurovision in Malmö.

Around 3,000 people were expected to participate in the large, licensed demonstration, but according to the latest police information, it is about 10,000. The demonstration is a protest against Israel’s participation in Eurovision.

“Police preparedness has been incredibly high all week”

– I feel sorry for everyone, on both sides. It’s not black or white, says Joanne Frost from Manchester to TV4 Nyheternas reporter.

One of the protesters is Sally, who holds a placard with the text “Jews for Palestine”.

– Just because I am Jewish does not mean that I consider what is happening in Palestine and the Gaza Strip to be right, she says.

Married – in the middle of the demon

Just before the departure from Stortorget, a couple took the opportunity to get married.

– This is the place where I belong. I am always on the streets, I fight for a free Palestine – in Belgium where I live and here in Sweden, says the bride, Lamis Al Ali, to TT.
