The Beninese Constitutional Court on Saturday (January 21st) rejected the main appeal of the opposition party Les Démocrates after a public hearing. The party which contests the results of the legislative elections of January 8 asked the wise men to order the Electoral Commission (Cena) to make available to it the minutes of the compilation of all the results to justify its recourse to challenge.

The court followed its rapporteur who recommended the rejection of the appeal of the Democrats party despite the last words of the lawyers. Counsel pleaded for a decision favorable to the applicant “ in the name of justice and social peace “.
The decision rendered explains that four provisions of the electoral code allow “ any political party to immediately have the results of the ballot and the electoral documents “. For the Constitutional Court, The Democrats don’t need the Cena’s minutes to prepare their appeals. »
Six other remedies
The president of the party points out at the bar that his representatives were deprived of these documents by the electoral agents. Regarding this accusation, the Court notes a lack of evidence. ” It is therefore necessary to reject the appeal of the Democrats “, decides the institution.
One of the vice-presidents of the party deplores this rejection. Alassane Tigri explains to RFI that “ it was an opportunity to prove that everything is transparent “. Apart from its appeal rejected on Saturday, the party filed six others for the invalidation of the seats of elected officials from the Talon camp. These appeals concern five electoral districts out of 24. The final results attribute 81 deputies for the Talon camp and 28 for the Democrats.
