The Netherlands Institute for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychology (NIFP) is involved in so-called pro Justitia reporting. Pro Justitia reports are investigations by an independent psychiatrist or psychologist into a person involved in a legal case.
In some cases, according to the court, it is necessary to admit someone to the Pieter Baan Center. The PBC is a psychiatric observation clinic and is part of the NIFP.
If a judge suspects that there is something mentally wrong with a suspect, the judge can order the suspect to be examined in the PBC.
The observation period lasts an average of seven weeks. Due to the many registrations, the waiting time for admission is currently more than four months.
