Defying the bullies – following his dream

Douglas was bullied all through third grade because he dyes his hair and loves nails.
But he continues to follow his dream:
– I want to show the stupid kids that they can’t change me.

12-year-old Douglas has his very own nail salon in his room. There he gets to realize his big dream of one day becoming a nail therapist.

But the road there has not been easy.

– I was bullied throughout the third grade, says Douglas Strandlund

Why?

– Because I like nails and I like coloring my hair, he says.

“Fantastic that he resisted”

Mother Monette has always stood by and comforted her son, while it pained her to see the one she loves so hurt.

She tells us that during breaks he used to hide in the toilet, because he didn’t dare to be among the other children.

– Children can be so mean and it’s hard to stand by as a mother. At the same time, it’s fantastic to see that he stood up to it and continues to dye his hair and be himself., says Monette Nickisch.

The years of bullying are over and now Douglas dreams of becoming a nail therapist – like his mother. He is only 12 years old but is looking forward to turning 18 when he can work side by side with his mother.
