Deforestation of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil fell by over 33 percent during President Lula da Silva’s first six months in power. It shows the satellite data presented by the government of Brazil.

From January to June, 2,650 square kilometers of forest disappeared, compared to 4,000 square kilometers in the same period last year.

– Our effort to turn the curve has had results, said João Paulo Capobianco from the Ministry of the Environment when he presented the figures.
