“Definition of a You Problem” Player finds unique bug that prevents him from playing the ending

Baldur’s Gate 3 is considered an absolute masterpiece among gamers. Nevertheless, there are errors here and there, although generally few, which are usually fixed quickly. Now a player has found a bug that is so specific that others are joking: it is now named after him.

Spoiler warning: This is about core themes in the story of Baldur’s Gate 3 and the ending of the game. If you’re not ready yet and don’t want to know about the ending, you shouldn’t read any further. This is the bug:

  • On Reddit, user palomAstra writes that he had an error shortly before the fight against Ketheric Thorm in Act 2.
  • The group actually has to follow Thorm to a mind flayer colony after a fight. Shadowheart stayed behind with him, the entrance was sealed and she had to stay outside.
  • The player then fought the boss fight with 3 characters, but ultimately died. He used Shadowheart to revive the group, but lost an important item.
  • Here’s why the player can’t finish Baldur’s Gate 3: After fighting Thorm, you actually receive one of the three nettle stones that you need to control the Elder Brain at the end of the game.

If you are missing even one of the stones, you cannot finish the game. There’s even a special scene if you intentionally destroy such a stone. You lock yourself out of the end.

In the case of palomAstra, however, there was no game-over scene and the user never received the stone. He just kept playing for 100 hours. It wasn’t until the end that he couldn’t use the crown to control the brain. The ending was blocked.

The player turned to the community with his problem and received quite dry ridicule in response. This is probably mainly because he continued playing for 100 hours instead of reloading straight away. Now the score is lost, he says.

Other users diligently distribute swipes. That is the definition of a “you problem”, definitely no one else has this problem, which could probably even be named after him. Missing the stone was on a par with Karsus’ folly.

palomAstra himself says that he certainly deserved the bombardment of ridicule, as it was his own stupidity. However, there are also people who sympathize and say: apparently the devs overlooked something here. Such a fatal error should not be in play.

While looking for a solution, palomAstra gets a few suggestions on how he could still finish the game. All he would have to do is still have Gale with him, then he could at least trigger a regular “Game Over”:
