Deficit: is there a French problem?

The surprising French growth in the second quarter of 2023

The French Ministry of the Economy announced yesterday (Wednesday April 10) that it will be necessary to find 10 billion euros in additional savings this year and is now forecasting a deficit of 5.1% in 2024, a little more than the previous forecasts. Lower revenues than expected were the cause of the public deficit slipping last year.

This situation rekindles the debate on the fear of debt, after several years of “whatever it takes”.

Why is it difficult to save money? Is this growing deficit so serious? How can we explain the differences between France and its neighboring countries?
