After Monday’s meeting with France’s President Emmanuel Macron, US President Donald Trump stated that he talked to Vladimir Putin that European peacekeeping forces could enter Ukraine as a security guarantee in the event of a ceasefire.
“I asked him the question and he says he has no problem with it,” says Donald Trump.
SVT’s foreign reporter Fouad Youcefi who followed the meeting on site in Washington calls the statement very startling.
– It would be the first time that Russia would agree to some flexibility in what they might want to agree on. However, we have not heard it from Russia and may not be drawing too far -reaching conclusions before we hear it from Russian, he says in Aktuellt.
At the same time, Magnus Christiansson, associate professor at the Swedish Defense College, states that the plan on European security guarantees in which France and the United Kingdom participate that Macron may have discussed with Trump is based on American participation.
– The arrangement is based on the US being in the background. Extensive security guarantees from France and the United Kingdom, but a conventional American force that exists in Europe for the guarantees to be backed up, says Magnus Christiansson in Aktuellt.
At the same time, he notes that there is currently no official information on what a European security guarantee might look like, but that it is still based on media data.
– It is very unclear and there are many question marks about this, says Magnus Christiansson.
Want to get to cease -fire within weeks
Donald Trump also stated after meeting Macron that he has a short -term goal, which he thinks may be in place already in a few weeks
– He says that his biggest goal right now is to get a first ceasefire and then you can talk about a longer peace. He also says that it can happen in just a few weeks, says Fouad Youcefi.
