Bol, who won the European Athlete of the Year award last year, faces competition from high jumper Yaroslava Majuchich from Ukraine and Spanish race walker Maria Pérez. Sifan Hassan was also on the shortlist of ten nominees, but she was eliminated from the final list. Last year, Bol was ahead of the Belgian heptathlete Nafissatou Thiam and Majoetsjich in the election.
