On the one hand, animal welfare organizations responded positively, but there were also major concerns among deer farmers. “They have drawn attention to the fact that deer parks in the Netherlands have a long history, are widespread and have a social value,” outgoing minister Piet Adema writes in the letter. “This has led me to decide, in this exceptional case, to provide a permanent exemption for keepers of fallow deer (Dama dama) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) from the ban on keeping animals that are not on the domestic and hobby animal list .”
