Decision on studded tire ban – to avoid fines in the amount of millions

There is too much of the health-hazardous particles PM10 around the Mälar Bridge. If the air quality does not improve, in accordance with the EU’s directive on how high levels of PM10 may be present, the EU threatens fines in the millions.

– We know that approximately 80 percent of the PM10 levels come via wear and tear from studded tires, says Alexander Rosenberg (M), chairman of the technical board.

Decision on ban despite strong criticism

The decision will affect commuters who live in rural areas and are in need of studded tires for safe driving during the winter. Another criticism is that it could be potentially negative for the city center if it reduces the flow of visitors.
