Decision: Abortion pill sentences frozen in the US

It was last week that conservative Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in a district court in Texas decided to put an end to the widely used mifepristone. Just an hour after the announcement from Texas, a federal judge in Washington issued a competing ruling, ordering continued access to the drug in 17 US states.

Since then, the US government and the company that makes the pills have appealed the Texas decision to the Supreme Court, demanding that restrictions on the drug be lifted while the legal battle continues.

The Supreme Court’s decision means that the various parties have until Wednesday to present their arguments.

Mifepristone has been approved in the United States for more than 20 years and is used in a majority of abortions in the country. Even the American pharmaceutical authority FDA questions Kacsmaryk’s verdict.
