Decided in extra time – Ronaldo made history

Portugal had big problems against the Czech Republic in the football European Championship – not until extra time could substitute Francisco Conceicao arrange the victory for the Portuguese.

At the same time, star Cristiano Ronaldo made history as the first to play in six European Championships.

It was a Portugal that ruled and put most of the effort on the field in the pouring rain in Leipzig, but the Czech Republic defended themselves meritoriously and made sure, among other things, to keep Ronaldo off the score sheet.

The 39-year-old superstar is also chasing another record – to become the oldest goalscorer in a football European Championship. And of course there were situations.

The first big goal chance for Ronaldo came in the 32nd minute of the match after the 39-year-old broke free in deep, but Czech goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek came out in a good way and managed to avert the situation.

Just before the break, it was time again – but once again Stanek stood in Ronaldo’s way.

The teams went into the break at 0-0 – and when a goal finally came after just over an hour, it was the Czech Republic who shockingly took the lead, through a shot from outside the penalty area by Lukas Provod.

However, it only took seven minutes before Portugal’s equalizer came. The 1-1 goal became a boring story for Czech defender Robin Hranac in particular, who steered the ball into his own goal.

It still looked like it would be a point for the Czech Republic – but in stoppage time, substitute Francisco Conceicao proved to be the hero when he made it 2-1 and secured victory for Portugal.

Incidentally, it wasn’t just Ronaldo who made history in the match. His teammate, center back Pepe, became the oldest player in a football European Championship at 41 years and 113 days.
