The explosion in the island’s capital St Helier, believed to have been caused by a gas leak, leveled the three-storey apartment complex.
“There are still residents missing. We estimate that number at two,” Police Chief Robin Smith said in a statement.
Smith has previously said that the search effort at the scene could take weeks.
Saturday’s explosion was the culmination of a tragic week for the self-governing British crown holding, whose economy relies heavily on banking, tourism and fishing. On Friday, the Coast Guard gave up the search for three fishermen from the island, who went missing after their boat rammed a freighter and sank.
