Death threat in hair salon in Utrecht was a cry for help, confused frequent offender wanted a quiet night in police cell

Death threat in hair salon in Utrecht was a cry

Just like the rest of the Netherlands, the province of Utrecht has been struggling for a long time with a growing number of reports of nuisance and crime by people with confused behaviour. The number of reports has increased by 30 percent in the past five years. According to the police, a relatively small group of people is responsible for a significant part of the incidents. Two to nine reports were received about one third of the confused offenders. An even smaller group of people came into contact with the police more than ten times.

According to Martin Sitalsing, chief commissioner of the Central Netherlands police, the group of extreme frequent offenders needs structural attention. “Draw up a joint plan for them, as is currently the case with child abuse and domestic violence, for example.”

At the end of last year, Minister Yesilgöz-Zegerius of Justice & Security announced that a total of 59 million euros will be made available until 2026 to intensify cooperation in the field of care, assistance and security.
