He was only 25 years old. “Astro member Moonbin left our world unexpectedly on April 19, becoming a star in the sky,” reads a message posted in Korean by the label Fantagio on its Twitter account. No cause of death has been made official at the time of writing.

Moonbin was found unconscious by his manager in his apartment in Seoul, reports the suc-Korean media, relayed by the BBC. A police source adds, to the same source: “He seems to have committed suicide, but an autopsy is in progress to determine the exact cause of death.”

Who was singer Moonbin?

Born on January 26, 1998 in Cheongju, South Korea, singer Moonbin made his debut in modeling in the 2000s, then as an actor. It was in 2016 that he joined the boy band that would make him successful: Astro. Composed of six boys, the formation exploded at the end of the 2010s. In 2019, Moonbin announced that, for health reasons, he had to take a break from his career. For a year, the artist stays away from the spotlight, before returning in March 2020. Since then, he has been performing in a duet with another member of the Astro group, Sanha, with whom he was currently on a world tour.

South Korean K-pop has been hit by four deaths of young artists in recent years. Recently, singer and actress Goo Hara was found dead at her home in 2019. That same year, another K-pop star, Sulli, also killed herself.
