Liverpool FC icon Ron Yeats is dead, the English football club announced in a press release. The 86-year-old had been living with Alzheimer’s disease in recent years.
The Scottish defender joined Liverpool from Dundee United in 1961 and became captain almost immediately.

The following years were a success story.
Yeats led Liverpool to promotion from the Second Division and then to two league titles in the 1960s, as well as the club’s first FA Cup victory in 1965.
Yeats wore the captain’s armband in 417 games with Liverpool, a record which Steven Gerrard only took over in 2013.
