(Finance) – “In this summer of 2023 we are witnessing unacceptable fuel price increases. The government has adopted mild measures (cartels with average prices) which, as we expected, have proved to be completely ineffective. Until the beginning of this year the discount on excise duties was in force, an extraordinary measure which, although not as incisive as the zeroing of VAT, had given motorists some breathing room”. That’s what he says Other consumption who launched a online petition to ask the government “to immediately reintroduce the cut of excise duties and above all that we proceed as soon as possible totemporary zeroing of VAT“. A request already signed by over 103,000 Italian citizens.
The zeroing of VAT – “We believe that the time has now come to act directly on VAT, eliminating it, as we already asked in our letter to the government. In fact, since VAT is a percentage, – Altroconsumo explains – it would have a greater impact than cutting excise duties in the event of future increases in raw materials and possible speculation in an already extremely precarious market. In 2022, despite the reduction in excise duties and due to the increase in fuel prices due to the war between Ukraine and Russia, each motorist spent around 130 euros more than in 2021 (assuming a consumption of 900 liters per year). With our proposal to zero VAT, each motorist would instead have saved 150 euros per car for refueling. In 2023, following our proposal to zero the VAT, the savings would be around 400 euros less per car. In fact, in the first six months of the year alone we would have saved over 200 euros on a full tank of petrol. Currently, however, we have already paid 115 euros more than in 2021 (December 2021 prices).”
Temporarily reset the VAT – “Precisely to avoid future increases also due to speculation, we believe – continues Altroconsumo – that the way forward is now that of temporarily zeroing VAT, which with its rate, currently at 22%, decisively determines the final price. Removing it is the only guarantee of a slowdown in the growth of the price of fuel at the pump. We therefore continue our battle by asking the institutions to eliminate VAT on fuel, both on the industrial cost and on excise duties”.

ALTROCONSUMO PETITION ON EXCISE TAX CUT: OK FROM 103 THOUSAND ITALIANS (DIRE) Rome, 18 August. – More than 103,000 Italian citizens have signed Altroconsumo’s online petition to ask the government to restore the discount on excise duties and eliminate VAT on fuel. Dear fuel: restore the discount on excise duties and reset VAT. The 103,000 citizens who signed the Altroconsumo petition are asking for it
In this summer 2023 we are witnessing unacceptable fuel price increases.
The government has adopted mild measures (cartels with average prices), which, as expected, have proved completely ineffective. Until the beginning of this year, the discount on excise duties was in force, an extraordinary measure which, although not as incisive as the zeroing of VAT, had given motorists some breathing space.
Altroconsumo demands that the cut in excise duties be immediately reintroduced and above all that VAT be eliminated as soon as possible, which also weighs on the excise duties themselves and which represents the only necessary structural measure. The government must now intervene quickly and without delay: the more than 100,000 citizens who have already signed the Altroconsumo petition are also asking for it.
