Deadpool Wolverine surprises with 9 Wolverines – only

Deadpool & Wolverine is a real grab bag of Marvel surprises. The multiverse trip with Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds overwhelms with over 20 cameos, 100 Deadpools, one of the funniest post-credit scenes in the MCU and of course one or two alternative versions of Wolverine.

Warning, there are spoilers for the film:

All Wolverine variants in Deadpool & Wolverine

In search of a suitable Logan replacement who could save his universe, Deadpool encounters different Wolverine variants from the multiverse in the first 30 minutes of the film. Some of them are a true Festival for fans of Marvel Comics.

Unfortunately, many of the variants only appear for a few seconds and are easy to miss. So that you don’t miss any Wolverine and understand all the comic references, you can find a Overview of all nine different Logans Deadpool & Wolverine.

Wolverine Variant 1: RIP Logan

20th Century Fox

Logan underground

In the very first minutes of the film, Deadpool begins to dig up the mutant who died at the end of Logan. His hope that he might still be alive due to his self-healing powers is immediately dashed. He only finds a rickety adamantium skeleton – and uses this directly as a weapon in the fight against TVA soldiers.

Wolverine Variant 2: The Worst Logan of All

Disney

Hugh Jackman as the “new” Wolverine

The most important variant of the film and the titular Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine is considered by the TVA as the worst Logan in the multiverse Although he is finally wearing his iconic comic costume, as a person he is a wreck and consumed by guilt for not having prevented the death of his X-Men.

Wolverine variant 3: Logan with comic-accurate body size

Marvel Comics

Wolverine is actually very small

The first Wolverine that Deadpool meets during his trip through alternate realities becomes the punchline of a gag. When this Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, rises from a bar stool, it quickly becomes clear that he downright tiny It is a funny reference to the comics, in which the X-Men character is rather small – unlike the almost 1.90 m tall Jackman.

Wolverine Variant 4: Logan from Age of Apocalypse

Marvel Comics

Wolverine in Age of Apocalypse

A dark side street and a wild black head of hair: This sweaty and one-handed Wolverine variant Not only does it look damn cool, it also comes straight from the pages of Marvel comics.

More specifically, it is a live-action version of the character from the crossover event Time of the Apocalypse (originally: Age of Apocalypse) from 1995. In it we see a reality that was dramatically changed by the early death of Charles Xavier and thrown into chaos by the supervillain Apocalypse.

Wolverine Variant 5: Uncanny Logan on the Cross

Marvel Comics

Cover of Uncanny X-Men No. 251

Another Wolverine variant is a dream come true for comic fans. This Logan was nailed half-naked to a cross and is surrounded by thousands of skulls. This is a Reenactment of a legendary cover the comic series Uncanny X-Menmore precisely issue number 251 from 1989.

Wolverine Variant 6: Patch

Marvel Comics

Patch

The next comic book reference is in a casino where Deadpool meets a Wolverine wearing a white suit and an eye patch. This version first appeared in the comics in issue 9 of the series Marvel Comics Presents in 1988. In it, he disguises his true identity with an eye patch (yes, really!) and mixes on the island of Madripoor under the name Patch among the people.

Wolverine variant 7: Wolverine in the classic brown and yellow costume

Marvel Comics

Wolverine in the John Byrne look

In the course of his comic history, Wolverine has worn many different costumes. Thanks to Deadpool & Wolverine, we get to see the classic brown and yellow outfit from the comics in live action for the first time. This Costume design by artist John Byrne in the 1980s.

This Wolverine variant, equipped with shiny chrome-plated blades, is a double comic book homage. In addition to the iconic John Byrne look, this short scene also provides a nod to Wolverine’s very first comic book appearance in the pages of The Incredible Hulkseries – and his legendary feud with the green rage-monger.

Wolverine Variant 8: Old Man Logan

Marvel Comics

Old Man Logan

Mark Millar’s comic series Old Man Logan was a groundbreaking inspiration for the 2017 film Logan. Only Logan wasn’t quite as grey as in the original. We get to see that in Deadpool & Wolverine. In his search for the ideal Wolverine, Deadpool meets a western version that is based on the aged Logan from the comics and sits grimly on a porch with a cowboy hat and shotgun.

Wolverine variant 9: Henry Cavill aka The Cavillrine

Paramount / 20th Century Fox

Henry Cavill

In the entire film, we only see one Logan variant that is not played by Hugh Jackman himself. During his multiverse trip, Deadpool meets “The Cavillrine“. Wearing the look from X-Men Origins: Wolverine (a white undershirt) and with a cigar in his mouth, Henry Cavill presents himself as an alternative Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine has been in German cinemas since July 24, 2024. It is the only film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to hit the big screen this year.
