After The Marvels turned out to be the biggest box office flop of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the latest film from the mega-franchise is breaking numerous records. Since its theatrical release, Deadpool & Wolverine has 824 million US dollars and there is no end in sight to the success story.
The Hollywood Reporter is busy collecting the records that the new Marvel blockbuster has set at the box office. One thing is particularly exciting: Deadpool & Wolverine is now the most successful film in the USA, with an R rating (here FSK 16 or FSK 18) in the cinema. Most blockbusters avoid this high age rating.
Most successful R-rated film in the USA: Deadpool & Wolverine dethrones The Passion of the Christ
The previous record holders in this category was Mel Gibson’s bloodthirsty Jesus film The Passion of the Christ, which grossed $371 million in the US with an R rating. Worldwide, the film grossed $612 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Deadpool & Wolverine has already surpassed both figures.

However, it has become the most successful R-rated film worldwide not yet doneTwo other films are ahead of Deadpool & Wolverine: Oppenheimer reached 975 million US dollars last year and Joker even broke the billion mark. Based on the current figures, however, these records are unlikely to last much longer.
Billion dollar mark within reach: Can Deadpool & Wolverine repeat the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home?
It can be assumed that Deadpool & Wolverine will also easily clear the billion dollar hurdle in the next few days. The big question is how far it can climb. With 1.5 billion US dollars, Inside Out 2 is currently the most successful film of the year. This number is not unrealistic for Deadpool & Wolverine.
The film that most closely compares to the new MCU spin-off is Spider-Man: No Way Home. Both films use the multiverse to popular characters from old Marvel universes With this nostalgia bonus (and without an R rating), No Way Home made $1.9 billion three years ago.
Deadpool & Wolverine has been running since July 24, 2024 in German cinemas.
