  • Deadly Russian attack on Odessa

    The Ukrainian port city of Odessa was subjected to an extensive Russian attack on Thursday evening.

    A 35-year-old woman was killed and another ten people were injured, including a nine-year-old boy, Ukrainian authorities said.

    Apartment buildings, a church, cars and an educational facility were damaged, as well as an important heating pipe. 40,000 people are without heat supply, the city’s mayor announces.

    Two of Donald Trump’s defense lawyers, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, will get top jobs in the US Department of Justice if the president-elect gets his way.

    Blanche has been nominated for Assistant Attorney General, alongside the controversial nomination of Congressman Matt Gaetz as Attorney General. Emil Bove will become Blanche’s closest employee.

    They both defended Trump, among other things, in the case where he was convicted of illegally paying money to porn star Stormy Daniels. The intention was that she would keep quiet about a sexual relationship she and Trump had. Trump has denied that.

    He was introduced by actor Sylvester Stallone – and spent much of the speech thanking party leaders and other allies for the election victory.

    Among other things, Trump paid tribute to his recently nominated minister Robert F. Kennedy, who was in the audience.

    He also drew attention to Elon Musk, who has remained close to the future president since the election.

    – I can’t get him out of here, Trump said.

  • NEW: Musk has met Iran’s UN summit

    Trump advisor and Tesla boss Elon Musk has had a meeting with Iran’s UN ambassador in New York. It happened at Musk’s request, The New York Times reports.

    Two anonymous Iranian representatives told the newspaper that the hour-long meeting between Musk and Amir Saeid Iravani was about ways to reduce tensions between the United States and Iran. The meeting was positive and meant “good news”, according to the Iranian sources.

    Donald Trump’s staff does not comment on whether a meeting took place, nor does Elon Musk.

    North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un has ordered “mass production” of attack drones, according to state news agency KCNA.

    Kim Jong-Un himself has overseen test firings of so-called patrol robots, designed to attack both land and sea targets by striking them.

    “He underlined the need to develop a system for mass production and start full-scale mass production as soon as possible,” writes KCNA.

    Japanese Princess Yuriko has died at the age of 101, writes the Japanese public service company NHK.

    The princess has been treated in a hospital in Tokyo since a heart attack in March.

    She was married to Prince Takahito Mikasa who died in 2016 aged 100.

  • Iran opens clinic for hijab refusers

    Iran plans to open a treatment clinic for women who defy the country’s strict veiling laws, writes The Guardian.

    An SAS plane from Arlanda to Miami has had to turn around after severe turbulence over Greenland.

    – We have decided to return and fly back to home base. It is routine when an aircraft is exposed to such strong turbulence, says Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji at SAS.

    There are 254 passengers on the aircraft. It will land at Kastrup at 23.15 according to SAS.

    – We need to investigate the plane at one of our own bases. That’s why we go back. It would not have been possible to do that in Miami, says Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji.

    The plane is currently near Iceland.

    According to SAS, a team will meet the passengers at Kastrup. They are booked into a hotel in Copenhagen tonight.

    – Then they can hopefully go to Miami tomorrow morning, says Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji.

    No less than 187 old hand grenades have been found in a forest area in Jönköping. On Friday they will be blown up.

    And that “can sound a bit” warns Jönköping municipality.

    Earlier this year, a private individual found a number of hand grenades in the area, which previously served as a military training ground.

    During the week, the municipality has carefully investigated the area and a large number of old hand grenades have thus been found.

    “We will finish the search on Thursday and therefore judge that we have found all grenades that could pose a potential risk. The grenades have been found within a fairly small area and we assess that this is where all the grenades have been concentrated,” says Fredrik Svärd, environmental engineer in the municipality of Jönköping, in a press release.

    The explosions are expected to continue for large parts of the day.

    A police car on call has collided with a van in Umeå.

    The accident occurred at an intersection.

    No one has been injured. The driver of the van was taken to the hospital for a check-up but did not require further treatment.
