Do you want to vote in the 2024 European elections but you will be absent on June 9? Consider making a power of attorney to a loved one. Here’s how.
The European elections will take place on Sunday June 9 in all municipalities in France. If you are not able to go to your usual polling station on this date, it is still possible to give a proxy to another voter: the proxy allows you to authorize a person to vote in your place. We’ll explain how it works.
For these European elections, it is possible to make your proxy entirely online, via the service My power of attorney set up by the Ministry of the Interior. To do this, you will need to go through the France Identity digital identity tool. You can also go to a police station, a gendarmerie or a judicial court in any municipality in France to complete the entire process. Finally, an intermediate solution consists of downloading the proxy form from the website of the Ministry of the Interior, then submitting it in one of the three places mentioned above.
For these European elections, you can give a proxy to any European citizen voting in France for the election. It is not necessary that the person be registered in the same polling station as you, nor in the same municipality. However, the person will have to go to your polling station on June 9 to vote for you.
Please note that each voter can only receive one proxy made in France. So make sure that the person for whom you wish to make a power of attorney does not already hold one for someone else.
There is no set deadline for making a power of attorney. Officially, you will therefore be able to submit your proxy request until the date of the election. However, it is advisable to do so as soon as possible so that your power of attorney request has time to be transmitted and processed by your town hall. To check the status of your power of attorney, you can use this digital tool of the Ministry of the Interior.
Can I go and vote even if I gave my proxy to someone?
Yes. If you can finally go and vote on election day, all you need to do is notify the person to whom you have given your proxy, so that they do not go to the polls in your place. You can then go to your polling station and cast your ballot yourself.
