Fishermen in the Stockholm archipelago made a macabre find on Tuesday afternoon.

According to information to TV4 Nyheterna, a dead man aged 55 was found wrapped in a rug in the water at Gålö in Huddinge municipality, south of Stockholm. The body must have tried to be lowered, according to the same information.

A major operation was launched with the maritime police and forensics technicians carried out an investigation at the site of the find. The incident is being investigated as a murder.

– We suspect that this person has been the victim of a crime, says Mats Eriksson, press spokesperson at the Stockholm Police.

75 kilometers from the industrial premises

According to information given to TV4 Nyheterna, the police do not suspect that the Stockholm archipelago is the scene of the murder. But the man is believed to have been murdered in an industrial area in Märsta north of Stockholm, 75 kilometers from the find site.

During Wednesday, the police cordoned off a premises and examined the scene with technicians. The police spokesperson does not want to confirm that the operation is connected to the murder.

– Märsta is about investigative work, says Mats Eriksson.

The victim was last seen alive in Märsta and was reported missing at the end of last week. The police suspect that the murder took place sometime from Friday last week until the day the body was found, according to information.

Chamber prosecutor Eva Twengström leads the murder investigation and says:

– It is a very early stage, but it can be confirmed that this person in question is dead, probably as a result of someone else, that someone else is behind the death. This is based on what can be ascertained when you have found him and made a highly ocular investigation.

More suspicions may arise

About the police operation in Märsta, Twengström says:

– I can confirm that it is part of the investigation into this incident. I can confirm that he was reported missing recently.

A middle-aged man was arrested late yesterday on suspicion of murder and is now being held on probable cause, the higher level of suspicion.

– He has not been heard from yet, but it will happen tomorrow.

Sources tell TV4 Nyheterna that more criminal classifications may be added.

– He is currently under arrest for the basic crime of murder, but that does not rule out that there may be further criminal suspicions, just as you say.

The suspected killer’s lawyer declined to comment.
