The dolphin that was found on a beach north of Kalmar during the Easter weekend was alive when it ran aground, but then died for an unknown reason.
This is confirmed by the Swedish Veterinary Medical Institute, when the autopsy is now complete. The dolphin, which was an adult male, actually seems to have been in good shape, if a bit thin.
“The diagnosis is that it ran aground alive, it happens from time to time around the world and we don’t know why they do that,” says marine biologist Moa Engman in a press release.
As air was found in the lungs, drowning or death at sea can be ruled out. Samples have been taken and further investigations will be carried out.
The discovery of the 1.5 meter long dolphin was made by some private individuals on Good Friday.
