Dead by Daylight brings single-player horror, works with the pros behind “The Quarry”

The makers of Dead by Daylight have announced a new game. “The Casting of Frank Stone” is intended to offer solo horror – and present tough decisions.

Dead by Daylight developer Behavior Interactive has teamed up with professionals from Supermassive Games (The Quarry, Man of Medan) to create their own story horror game. It will be set in the Dead by Daylight universe, but will be a pure single-player experience.

As part of the Game Awards 2023, a first trailer for “The Casting of Frank Stone” was revealed, which you can watch here:

What is The Casting of Frank Stone about? The exact story is not yet known. But we know that it will be about the town of “Cedar Hills,” which has had a brutal past. A certain “Frank Stone” committed a number of atrocities here and they have left wounds – in families, generations and even reality itself. A group of young people set out to find out more about it and come into contact with the dark incidents , the center of which appears to be an old steelworks.

What we already know:

    We’ve already had the opportunity to ask the developers behind The Casting of Frank Stone a few questions. We spoke to Steve Goss (Creative Director of the game, SMG), Dave Richard (Senior Creative Director, Behavior) and Mathieu Côtè (Head of Partnerships, Behavior).

    MeinMMO: Dead by Daylight already has a large cast of original characters that many people like. What led to the decision to use a whole new cast of characters instead of using those already known?

    Steve Goss: We wanted the freedom to tell a story without being tied to existing characters. Our goal was to be authentic and show a story in which the characters grapple with the truth of the DbD universe. It’s a story that perhaps hasn’t been explored as directly as we intend to with this game.

    Even if the game isn’t set in the Entity’s world, this mysterious figure can still be seen in the trailer. Can we expect to learn a few new details about the nature of the entity?

    DaveRichard: “Players can expect to learn more about the DbD universe from a new perspective in this game. For anyone who has never heard of or played Dead by Daylight, The Casting by Frank Stone is a great way to be introduced to this diverse world and its history. So they will be able to discover a part of this world that they have never seen before.”

    Another Dead by Daylight game was released a while ago, Hooked on You. However, the game wasn’t that serious and ended up not being part of the main game’s official story. The Casting of Frank Stone seems to be a lot more serious and in line with what you would expect from the world of Dead by Daylight – so will the game be part of the story?

    Mathieu Côté: “The story that unfolds in The Casting of Frank Stone is part of the Dead by Daylight canon. It’s the first time we’ve explored a story outside of the realms of the entity we see in Dead by Daylight. So it tells a story that hasn’t been explored yet. Of course we can’t talk about how it will fit into the Dead by Daylight universe yet, you’ll have to find out in the game!”

    Will Frank Stone and the “survivors” end up being playable characters in the original Dead by Daylight?

    Mathieu Côté: “That wouldn’t make any sense, would it? :)”

    We also wanted to elicit a few details about the gameplay from the developers, but they are keeping a low profile for now. But what they were able to tell us:

    Steve Goss: “Regarding gameplay inquiries, we will have to wait a little longer before we can reveal more information about this part of our game. However, at this point we can say that the game focuses on the story telling, player choices and branching storylines, with the aim of providing a very emotional and cinematic experience. Every decision made will shape the plot and influence the fate of the characters, shaping the course of this captivating tale full of life-and-death decisions.

    By collaborating with Behavior, we have integrated the insights of Supermassive Games while infusing the values ​​of Dead by Daylight, resulting in a new dynamic of core mechanics and gameplay experience. There will be significant differences to previous Supermassive games, for example in the execution of [Quick Time Events] or the application of pressure. Players can expect a greater variety of choices and greater influence over the narrative structure itself.”
