It should be extravagant, well-thought-out and debaucherous. Every year, the celebrity elite go to great lengths to stand out at the Met Gala.
But some of this year’s most notable guests weren’t even there – but AI-generated.
Katy Perry in a billowing ball gown covered in flowers, the hem of which appears to be made of living moss. Rihanna in a huge screen-like outfit embroidered with plants and birds. Selena Gomez in a detailed butterfly-like creation in purple and blue tones.
Photos of the three stars at the Met received a lot of attention when they were shared on X, especially since it turned out that no one was actually there. All three images were AI-generated, Time reports.
The pictures were so lifelike that Katy Perry’s own mother thought it was real.
“Didn’t know you went to the Met Gala. What an amazing dress,” Perry’s mother wrote to her in a text message, which the artist herself shared on Instagram.
At the same time, Katy Perry announced that she could not attend the gala because she had to work.
The Met Gala is one of the fashion world’s biggest galas and is held annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to raise money for the museum’s costume and fashion department. This year’s dress code was “The garden of time” and the theme for the exhibition “Sleeping beauties: reawakening fashion”.
