David Sassoli, President of the European Parliament (EP), died in the hospital where he was treated for more than two weeks in his country, Italy.
David Sassoli’s death this morning, spokesman Roberto Cuillo announced on his Twitter account.
Sassoli, 65, was hospitalized after a disorder in his immune system.
It was announced that Sassoli’s condition was serious, and all official activities of the EP President were cancelled.
Sassoli, who was hospitalized in September due to pneumonia, could not preside over the sessions of the EP for a long time and did not attend high-level meetings such as European Union summits.
Sassoli did not stand for reelection in the EP presidential election to be held in Strasburg on 17-20 January.
