“Dating itself can be exciting”

Time to find love? Many Swedes go online to find a partner, or just someone to meet for a night.

– Dating itself can be erotic and exciting, says sexologist Jack Lukkerz.

The day of love is here. In any case, the generally accepted commercially anchored version of the day of love. For those who have not yet found the special friend of their heart, the Internet and dating apps are a popular way to get out on the famous track.

In the Internet Foundation’s report “The Swedes and the Internet” for 2022, it appears that every fourth single Swede is dating online. But there are more men than women looking for the right one among swipes and matches. One in three single men and one in five single women.

“Shall we fuck?”

– It is possible to make slightly different analyzes about why the distribution looks like that. One can be sexual, that more men are looking for temporary sexual contacts. Online dating can be a quick way to achieve that, says sexologist Jack Lukkerz, who is affiliated with Malmö University, and continues:

– There is also a larger selection online. If I don’t succeed this time, there are 20 others I can try. Dating itself can also be erotic or arousing.

The fact that online contact means a certain amount of anonymity, no one knows if you are actually sitting on the exercise bike or on the sofa with the other hand immersed in the bag of chips, also makes it easier for some.

– In general, you can say that men, even if it is stereotypical, have more difficulty conducting conversations in different contexts. Like the pub or over a dinner. Some think it’s too slow or that the social codes are difficult to understand, says Lukkerz and continues:

– At a dinner you probably can’t say “shall we fuck?” directly, but on dating apps it can work.

Young women surf porn

The report “The Swedes and the Internet” also states that four out of ten Swedes who met their current partner in the last five years did so online. Even in the long term, more people have met online. Of those who met their current partner in the last 20 years, a third started the romance online.

Among the younger generation, half of the 90s singles have tried their luck online in the past year.

– It is a generation that lives its life online, says Lukkerz.

Even the more carnal part of being together can be seen online. According to the report, eight out of ten men born in the 90s surf porn. In general, almost every other single man surfs porn. But only one in ten women. Among 90s women, however, it is one in three who look up the nude online.

– It’s also a bit stereotypical, but the fact that more men than women surf porn can be linked to the fact that with porn you don’t have to take into account different levels of desire, or communication. There you do as much or as little as you want on your terms. Porn can be something that allows you to escape the demands that are otherwise associated with a relationship.
