In everything we had to give we get to know three young people whose apparent idyll turns out to be an absolute horror scenario. Because without guessing it, they head to a dark end.
In the stream: that’s what everything we had to give is
The students: inside Kathy (Carey Mulligan), Tommy (Andrew Garfield) and Ruth (Keira Knightley) grow up in England in the 1980s in the secluded boarding school Hailsham. Here you not only have to face the challenges of growing up, but are also confronted with a cruel truth that you gradually catch up with.
Because with the students: inside it is not ordinary people – they are all there for a certain reason. When Kathy and her friend: understand the scope of her fate inside, it seems too late.
Exciting sci-fi film shows us at Disney+ an idyll that is deceptive
Everything we had to give is based on the dystopian novel by Kazuo Ishiguro. Director Mark Romanek and screenwriter Alex Garland managed to capture the dark charm of the book template.
Although the meaning of Hailsham is an open (cruel) secret, The horror sneaks up very carefully. Like Kathy, Tommy and Ruth, we are fooled by the peaceful postcard landscape.
And that is exactly the ingenuity: it takes time for the main characters (and we) to really understand the upcoming fate. As soon as it is so far, it hits you with full force.
A merciless sci-fi twist raises disturbing questions
Everything we had to give is science fiction that grabs you where it hurts. Because the world of the film is terrifyingly familiar. This creates the scary feeling when looking not only because of the nasty unveiling. But also because nothing of what happens there seems really impossible.
The charm of the film is clearly in the threatening mystery atmosphere and the touching dynamics between his main characters.
Urgent questions are raised: How far can you go to save a human life? What do identity or freedom mean?
Everything we had to give is available in streaming subscription at Disney+.
